Twenty-Two

Once the initial shock has worn off, I turn back around. Unlike last month in the woods, the house is still behind me. It doesn’t feel like I’ve been transported into the circus, so much as the circus has been transported to me. I’ve gotten used to seeing the Ferris wheel standing high above the trees in my backyard, but to see it now through the woods behind Julian’s house is unsettling. What if my classmates come outside and see it? Can they even see it?

I take a step forward, toward the woods, when I remember I’ve got Apollo with me. There’s a part of me that wants to leave him here, bring him inside, and have Julian sit him down with a gallon of water, but I can’t do it. It’s his circus as much as it is mine. And because a quick glance tells me he’s noticed its arrival as well.

“Asher?” he asks. Apollo lets go of my arm and takes a step backward. “What’s going on? How did you get here? Where are we?”

He looks back at Julian’s house, confused, then groans. “Shit,” he says, massaging his temples as though he’s suddenly got a massive headache. “I feel like I was hit by a truck.”

He sounds different, more like his normal self, by which I mean he doesn’t seem to be drunk anymore. If anything, he sounds, and looks, as though he was thrust suddenly into sobriety and has the hangover to show for it. He’s also no longer dressed as René but as himself. His circus self.

A quick glance downward shows me I’m no longer dressed as Frankenstein’s monster either.

Apollo seems genuinely confused about where we are, which means he might have had so much to drink he doesn’t remember coming to Julian’s party at all. Which might mean he doesn’t remember me coming outside either. Certainly he hasn’t seemed to put my separate identities together yet.

“Come on,” I say, avoiding answering any of his questions. “Let’s go check it out.”
